The best week of my life part two : Tying the knot

Images by @jacksonloriaimages

It nearly all went pear shaped. I had taken care of all I needed to do except a couple of tasks. I had a cut throat razor shave. Picked up the flowers and cleaned the car. All was well and just a couple of small tasks. These tasks and their pre arranged timelines blew out massively. Racing out to my car for the final dash home to try and scrub up into something presentable, I find my car chained up in a carpark. Forty minutes later I am weaving through traffic trying to boot home and back. I can’t find my new pressed shirt and tie, I just jump in the car and floor it, calling Jo to let her know I will be late. I’m sorry darlin’ but you will have to be aware that I will be wearing a wife beater at the ceremony and that’s that. She just laughs and says it’s fine with a whiskey tinged giggle. I park my car on the footpath in a cloud of tyre smoke. In between two ice buckets I find my shirt and tie, call my brothers and let them know I made it. I’m running as I am getting dressed, cursing and relieved.

Questions such as “How will you adapt and change as you grow old together” were answered with “I will buy a motorbike”. She did quite well.

The best week of my life part one : Bux

I wasn’t too keen on a Bux, but with a little encouragement we threw one together. It was going to be nice weather so we gathered the crew and headed down the Peninsular. Beer always helps, and there was rules. Cans only, tape your next to your last.

First stop was Mt Eliza. Cunnaz tucked one into the deep. Tom Peden photo.

We headed to the new park at Balnarring. Its a ripper little spot, with a little pine forest to slither style camp in. After a dip at the beach, we cranked up the lights and the tunes. My brother Hugh drove down from Frankston with a gourmet spread. We might have let off a few fireworks.

All night there were hollers for tape for the next beer or breach repairs.

The Mayor’s 40th Beerday Convoy & RJ is a wild man

So on Saturday night The Mayor celebrated his 40th rotation around the sun with a shindig at his joint. After quite a few deep fried chillies and large amounts of liquor he finished up about 6am. I had informed him that there was no buffer zone for the 12:30 departure well in advance at about 2am. Anyway he was a little worse for wear and a little late for departure despite living next door.

The mini guitar copped quite a workout.

Respect Where Due : Matt “The Mayor” Green

My estimate is 1987. That was the period of history where The Mayor thought to himself “Yep, this will do just fine.” This does not just relate to a shape of board or a style of shoe, this relates to a Style itself. The way the trick is performed, the sound of the thwack when the Rock n Roll is decked, the rawness and the flow. There is the attitude based around respect and paying dues as much as it is around shredding.

Matt and I share a fence. I had a appendicitis the first new years eve in my house and was not up for a party. I was stoked to be kept awake by Black Sabbath being cranked well into the morning. Since then becoming very close mates with Matt and Clare has been great. It reminds me of being a teenager having your skate rat neighbour knocking at your door. The attire is period correct to my teenage memories too.

So, yeah. Respect where due to The Mayor.

Respect Where Due : Tim “Cunnaz” Cunneen

When Cunnaz drops in it’s on. No matter how heavy the spot or how many beers he has put away he is going to throw down. Always keen to hit the road with Trevor in one hand and a chilly bin in the other, a ripper one liner and a sense of adventure.

These photos are of skateboarding done powerfully, solidly and at full speed.

Respect Where Due : Sam Bishop

You will see Sam fangin’ around, getting more speed out of pockets than should be possible. Not a technician, more of a brawler on the concrete. It is a pleasure to watch. I haven’t skated with Sam that long, but I am stoked when we hit it up. Always positive and always fun.

Sam is going to be a Dad soon. I reckon he will be rad at it.

If you only watched skateboarding videos or flicked through magazines you may never of heard of him. If you are out regularly schralping the concrete you would know who he is. Suffice to say Seany has been ripping harder, for decades, far more than most.

These photos are of regular sessions with Seany throwing down. Full speed and fully committed. Consistent and solid.

Dubbo and the search for full pipes

I was planning on spending the night at my cousin Dans house (and talking his ear off about getting my pilots licence) but I was making good time so we caught up for a beer instead. So from Milthorpe I headed to Molong, Wellington and then Dubbo. I didn’t want to risk driving to Tamworth at dusk as I had seen some huge kangaroos already, but pushed on through some cracking back roads. The roads were Mad Max territory and I was cranking Metallica, there may have been some “settle down there mate” moments.

nundle2sm

Dubbo is the pinnacle of Dorfus era Convic parks. Great lines and balls-shrinking-into-your-stomach sized obstacles. It was pushing well into the 35 degree territory, real dry heat, so I got some before I saw little white dots and called it a session.

dubbo2sm

This is the feature I wanted to push my limited abilities on. After a thorough clean out I tried to get higher frontside in the pipe until I slammed on my back. Laying there, writhing about like a fish on a riverbank I contemplated skateboarding this stuff completely alone, no one in sight. I pictured the local ghetto kids picking up my camera gear and car keys whilst I lay there. It helped me get up off my arse.

dubbopipesm

I caught up with my old man, driving straight to his touch footy game. At 63 he plays against blokes in their 40’s. They were all top blokes, giving each other crap over a few tinnies. Some of Dad’s mates have started playing bowls. I knew he was keen, but slightly hesitant to get started. We played a game together, which was his first. This year has reinforced the importance of family immensely for me. My older brother Ben and his son Luca played too and we had a couple of beers.

pipesm

Next to it was this bad boy. What a ditch! It was surprisingly smooth. It was on a hill so by the time you reached the bottom you were really fangin’. I did all manner of skids and boneless ones and had a fantastic time.

I was pretty stoked. I’ll be back for you Egg Pipe!
