Mild in the Streets 47. Old man yells at cloud

BLOGS NOT DEAD!

Good old blogs. The undisputed king of social media. Everything else is a dystopian dumpster fire. This version of the future sucks I wanted Bladerunner. I ended up with attention span ruining dancing for nefarious data mining spyware. Slow clap world.

So you know the drill by now, every year after 40 I try and struggle out a few skateboard photographs. I was fortunate enough this year to have the charming and always enthusiastic @r0b0p1x on duty. I tested his patience pretty good he is a resilient fellow. You should follow his insta. I am genuinely stoked with how they turned out.

Here’s the thing. 47 feels fine. Good even. I have had to put in the work physically. I eat well, I’m at the gym every other day, I stretch at the spot for ages to the confusion and occasional disgust from youths. It is my third birthday sober (who would have thought? Certainly not me!) However it is all worth it. I can keep getting pummelled into the concrete riding my childs toy about and that makes me happy. It stabilises the undiagnosed and unaddressed mental health issues I bury in the pit of my soul. Problem solved.

I keep chipping away at my architecture and skatepark career with the guidance and assistance from Playce, my wife is the best and continues to inspire, challenge and surprise me. I have rekindled the love of mountain biking and snowboarding and challenging myself as a driver in motorsport environments. It would be helpful if I didn’t partake in such expensive hobbies.

I have gone from having two or three carloads on the session to Nigel No Mates. Shoutout to them heads that hit me up on the regular (particularly Rodos) and for those that try and schedule sessions with our conflicting small windows of opportunity with our schedules. People leave town, people have to stop or just stop…I get it.

I still have that fire in my decreasing in girth belly to give it a nudge. This is all I got. Behold…Yeah sure.

Had to go fast into this to get on top. Got a couple of nice hippers. Slappy

Bank rock was excellent. Punk bands in a ditch. You should go to the next one. Backside boneless wallride

Another wallride photo. Obstacle was sketchy and you had to haul to get to it

Can do them bigger but whatever…I was not aware I was being photographed and I’m not going to ask someone to wait for me to land one! 360 flip. Fitzy rules.

Ollie up to ollie over. Angles are all weird to hit it and you are rolling cross ways along the beams. Thanks Isabel for the suggestion!

Skateboarding on cars is such a big thing for me. First videos always had cars at the comps, I used make sure the comps I hosted had a car. The owners of the car came out. I said it wasn’t going anywhere, they agreed and stayed to watch.

Here is the clip. Thank you for making it this far in your busy lives 🙂

Magaranch Opening

Jesse Beaumont had been on the tools for a few months leading up to the opening of the recently rebuilt Megaranch. We managed to get a pass due to all his hard work. Cheers! We were down that way in Leongatha camping and skateboarding to celebrate Dan’s 40th. I didn’t snap any photos the whole camping trip unfortunately, I was having too much fun!

It was also the opening of the megaranch, and the owner’s 40th. It is in the middle of nowhere, however one of the neighbours complained so the whole thing had to be moved. Peter Wilson built the massive structure for his son Keefer and daughter Aaliyah, and for the wider Australian skate community. It was a massive undertaking originally as it was. It then had to be pulled down and rebuilt after a lengthy court battle.

A few of the crew padded up and rolled in from the landing to the 27ft quarter and let me tell you, it was terrifying. I knew when Cunnaz was struggling to keep it tidy on the flat I was going to have a few issues, I’ve never seen him out of his depth on a skateboard! I had half a dozen kickturns in I left it to the crew that knew what they were doing!

I only had the camera out for half an hour and didn’t really shoot the gap. Maybe another time.

Thank you to the Wilson family for their hospitality and for making this amazing resource become a reality. In the years to come this facility will change the lives of the next generation of skateboarders that ride it.

It is a bohemouth!

Tom was shredding, another young kid with a big future.

Tas’ boy Billy was clearing the gap and giving it more than us old NSC blokes!

Renton is always incredible to watch, he has been in excellent form lately. Weird trick to shoot but this is a bigspin (540′ shuv it)

RJ was looking relaxed. Like he was skating a backyard mini. He has been in the top five of Australian transition destroyers for a decade now. That’s a big call I know. I doubt anyone that has witnessed him with his foot flat on the accelerator would disagree. This bail shows how full on the tick is and the high stakes. That coping has no platform either!

NSC Xmas Bash 2017

Nothing better than hitting the road. Disagree? Your opinion is invalid. It is a spec in the distance of the rear view mirror. Shrinking, disappearing. Like the troubles, anxieties or fucks to be given.

It hasn’t been as easy to get the crew together. I’m putting it down to the silly season and newborns and so forth. Once the dust settles on 2017 crew should be easier to muster. I bloody hope so.

Anyhow, we headed North East across to the alpine grazing region of the state, to drink beer, eat BBQ, heckle our friends lying in pain on the concrete and occasional skateboarding.

These guys had the right idea, except they were taking away all the good bits about motorcycles and adding a death pod. I snapped this whilst eating an AM pie.

First stop Yea. Scotty swept after hooning through Flowerdale in his SS ute. Cheers for driving mate!

Thanks gents, always a pleasure

Mild in the streets: 41.

Since I turned the big four zero last year I thought a good way to motivate my self was to try and get a few skateboarding photographs every year. Now my age has clicked over it has come time to share a few.

So behold, bask in my underwhelming lameness. As time goes onwards these pissweak skateboarding feats will become progressively worse. It will be a timelapse where I slowly morph from a pirate into a wizard. So, unfortunately, this is as good as it is going to get.

Thank you to Duncan Ewington aka @ewingram for the photos. Us grown man grommets help each other to keep the stoke alive. You can call shotgun anytime mate.

A hazard plant on an overnighter to Kerang. Sleeping next to the park with a belly full of beer and BBQ is as good as it gets.

Lexi’s ramp is insane. Seeing him hit it is superhuman shit. The transition to vert ratio is wild.

This is just a go to trick. However, it’s on my backyard ramp and there is nuclear stuff coming out of my arse. Every time I look at my backyard I am reminded that I have awesome mates and that I am still a child. I think this white t shirt phase lasted a week max.

Bucket list stuff. Carving a cake in a backyard pool. This doesn’t look like much but I would say it took a good hour. The struggle is real.

My favourite ramp at Mat’s shed in Kyneton. Rare front feeble.

Slappies are the best. I have wanted to have a crack at this for ages. I’m sure a little bit of wee came out.

Respect where due: Mudguts

Mudguts is a man of few words. Carefully chosen, but few. He will be the last one rolling the spot, trying to get that last trick. Long after everyone else has decided it is time to take a seat and heckle. On our recent camping trip he skated for a solid 12 hours…Yep 12. He might look life a ruff nut, but the truth is he is a cat loving softy. Nothing wrong with that! Mind you he will fire up if provoked in true ginger form.

It’s pretty hard to take a shite photo of Muddy. Everything is done clean and with speed. If you follow The Grim Creepers he gets a fair few photos featured. Stoked for more sessions in 2016

Trying to get ourselves sorted and organised for a skate weekend away is a nightmare in logistics. It’s like herding cats, but the cats in zero gravity and there are biscuits floating everywhere to distract them.

We finally got our shit together and made some loose plans, stocked up the chilly bins and leaned heavily on Bristol Nick to take care of our infrastructure and resources. He stepped up to the plate superbly.

We were all having such a great time that we didn’t take heaps of photos. Duncan (@ewigram) and Tom Peden (@tommypeden) and I pooled our photos. Make sure you follow them on insta if you don’t already. Tom was injured, hence why there are no handsome back tail photos.

I won’t babble on as there is a load of photos to get through.

Friday at Noble Park II

I had a hell of a lot of commitments this week and a few small windows of opportunity. I headed out to the new Noble Park Skatepark on Wednesday and was subsequently rained out. I was really keen to hit it, and a bit starved for skateboarding in general due to the weather and free time not aligning.

Friday afternoon was looking sweet, and the weather was forgiving. I can’t fault this park, and had a great time. I’m in love with the snake run. With the big bowl and now Brunswick, I’ve got to bite the bullet and buy some pads! The big bowl is gnarly, and the veterans and new gen alike were giving the perfectly set coping a hiding. I literally got my camera out for 15 minutes at a three hour session. I’m sure the place is going to host a tonne of good times and heavy sessions.

Dan Rodwell was charging. You can see by the angles of that back foot and the angle of the trucks there was some punishment inflicted on the corner.

Friday at Noble Park

The weather has been horrid every day off I have had lately. Friday was superb, so it was time for some skids on the old skateboard. I went into work at 7:45 to tie up some loose ends, then to Doncaster to get my back aligned (is there nothing more satisfying?) and then met up with Duncs.

The CSP crew were kind enough to invite a few heads out for a roll at the nearly finished Noble Park behemoth. I couldn’t pass up on that, the place will be the best park in the state. The fences are still up and security present, so if you haven’t been invited just wait a few more weeks. The place is epic, snake run, bowl and street section are incredible. Hats off to the CSP crew on the tools Baseplate and Australian Legend Johnny McGrath.

I have been having a lack of inspiration with the old bail cannon lately, skating a lot, just not wanting to get the camera out. I thought I better get back in the mood as we have a heavy weekend of radical adventures ahead.

Five blokes one dog squeezed into a Forester and we hit the long, boring, straight road. I only got the camera out for about 20 minutes, this is a few of the manoeuvres that ensued.

Concrete induced freedom

I’m sitting at my old work, a joint where I spent 50 hours a week in a high pressure high stress environment. Sure I had some fun and met some great people, but sure as hell I saw the ugly, at times unfair dog eat dog side of big business. I’m not bagging my old employer at all, they helped me buy a house and were very supportive during hard times. I learnt a great deal and gained some great mentors I will seek advice from for a lifetime. It is a reflection on the industry in general and this place was paradise compared to most joints in the field.

It is just one of those days of reflection. A mid life crisis. I tried to work in youth work and have a meaningful impact, I was great with some kids but found I got frustrated with kids lacking motivation. Not good at all. Plus it sucked working so hard and not being able top meet your financial responsibilities. Do I go back to school and study? Do I move to the mountains? How do I find meaningful ways to have a positive impact on the world? How can I make a living and get by using my creativity?

None of this matters when you have your mates following you in convoy ready to battle some concrete. I can immerse myself in a bubble of people that I can relate to. People I understand and respect. I can see them push their limits, struggle with determination versus self preservation. As they release the burden of self restraint and wind up to full speed. The session builds. Heats up. Internal battles are fought. People get broke off and look like throwing in the towel. They pick themselves up due to the heckles and more often than not get away with landing what they were trying, to the wolf pack noises from their mates. It is a simple, childish and somewhat foolish pursuit. To me, it makes everything make sense. I am so grateful to be a part of it, even if my passion to skills balance is way off.

The weather has not been kind. The crew took advantage of a clear day and hit the road Geelong way.

The Pit didn’t get sessioned that much this time. I think after one of the MOSS boys was laying motionless in the bottom for a bit people lost their motivation. 35 year old ‘crete hurts
